From the moment it introduced its DJ feature in 2023, music streaming platform Spotify begun its gradual integration of AI features — and there’s no slow-down in sight. With this algorithmic uptick and executive Daniel Ek’s sizeable investments in AI weapons manufacturing, some audiophiles are gravitating towards more ethical alternatives.

Writer Sukanna Naqvi spotlights different streaming substitutes for users who’ve had enough of Spotify’s profit-driven interface. Speaking with Toronto musician Kid Cricket (@kidcricketmusic), Naqvi also gains insights on how smaller artists are grappling with Spotify’s corruption of the streaming economy.

On the hunt for a romantic bouquet, your instincts
On the hunt for a romantic bouquet, your instincts will probably steer you toward the crimson classic — a bundle of roses. But have you ever stopped to consider something a little more unconventional?

Floral arranging is a complex, technical art form, with some florists crediting the golden ratio principle for their curation process. Writer Riddhi Dhingra (@_riddhi.dhingra) spoke to local florists who take pride in their seasonal variations. They urge patrons to seek out more personal arrangements and find romance in the seasons.

“For these artists, the goal is to shift the consumer’s focus from the quantity of stems to prioritizing artistic expression and composition,” writes Dhingra.

In the contemporary art world, there has been a growing push in recent years to recognize tattooing as a fine art. Showcasing the work of tattoo artists domestically and beyond, a pop-up exhibit “Indelible Tattoo” looked to shift perspectives past the needle.

In attendance, contributor Kristian Tofilovski (@kristian.tof) speaks with some of the exhibitionists and tattoo artists about their thoughts on the art form entering gallery spaces. With a history that stretches over millennia in the Global South and its counter-cultural prominence in the Global North, some artists are hesitant about the rush for formal recognition.

Told by a coyote story from Indigenous mythology, ‘We Survived the Night’ recounts intergenerational trauma and loss with glimpses of humour. Following his 2024 Oscar-nominated documentary ‘Sugarcane,’ Julian Brave NoiseCat (@jnoisecat) picks up the story with his debut non-fiction book.

In a November panel hosted by the Canadian Journalism Foundation (@canadianjournalismfoundation), NoiseCat sat down with Tanya Talaga (@tanyatalaga_author) for a conversation about his newest release. Food Editor Sorousheh Salman (@sorousheh_salman) was there to tell us all about it, catching a few words from Talaga herself after the event. In the discussion, NoiseCat goes in depth about the vulnerability it took to put his family’s story in words, onto pages for the whole world to read.

Grasping for comfort while navigating childhood, adulthood and motherhood, a sock puppet becomes a woman’s safety shield in ‘The Unravelling of Ou.’ Ecology Paul the puppet is the narrator of protagonist Minoo’s story — naming the deepest and truest parts of her.

Iranian-Canadian author Hollay Ghadery (@hollayghadery) sat at the writer’s desk, sock puppet in-hand, for the year she spent writing the novel. Contributor Liana Yadav (@liana_yadav) spoke to the author about the lived experiences that shaped the narrative of the book. For Ghadery, it was important she didn’t try to fit her voice into a neurotypical framework of storytelling.

“We all have outlets that we escape into and oftentimes they’re not healthy. As I was reading, I wondered if there was a difference between endless doom-scrolling to feel better about myself and speaking to a puppet. I did not come up with many answers,” writes Yadav.

Did you know the majority of book purchases in Canada are made online? With corporate giants like Amazon facilitating monopolized consumer trends, smaller presses are left to traverse a rough terrain.

Speaking to local book sellers and publishers like Little Ghosts Books (@littleghostsbooks) and Hopeless Romantic Books (@hopelessromanticbooks), writer Ayla Maxwell investigates how the independent industry prevails through the turmoil. As it turns out, there are irreplaceable parts to the curated, in-person book shopping experience.
