Being an artist in a plagiarism-ridden world may have you questioning how to maintain a sustainable career. Raymond Biesinger (@raymondbiesinger) centres that battle in his memoir ‘9 Times My Work Has Been Ripped Off.’ The illustrator gives fellow creatives the lowdown on how to deal with the theft of their work and honour their labour.

From the crowd at his Toronto book launch and a one-on-one conversation with Biesinger, writer Liana Yadav (@liana_yadav) describes the exasperating events that inspired the book. What initially started as a vengeful project directed at a non-profit organization that stole his work soon turned into a survival guide for artists in an apocalyptic freelancing climate.

Filipino aromatics engulf shoebox apartments, lola
Filipino aromatics engulf shoebox apartments, lolas usher overflowing plates at family gatherings and parents share long-winded family anecdotes. Those were instrinsic parts of Eunice Soriano’s (@eunicevsorianomedia) childhood.

The writer gets candid in this personal essay about growing up Filipino in a smaller town that boasted white culture. With words from her parents, Soriano gives us a glimpse into escaping the confines of pre-packaged lunchables.

In collectivist corners of the city, the artwork embellishing infrastructure and obscure passageways may be just a splash of colour in your day-to-day. But for graffiti artists, each sprayed stroke is entrenched in decades of protest and subsequent criminalization.

Tracing graffiti’s origins and current state of affairs, Arts Editor Zanoah Plummer (@zanocalypse) has the story. The writer grasps the persecutional climate for graffiti artists in Toronto, as the loose categorization of street art versus graffiti dictates legality. Street artists Philip Saunders and Adrian Hayles provide their insights on the municipal graffiti replacement programs putting street art in its place and spiking the medium’s obsolescence.

In the midst of pretentious and profit-driven noise in the art world, Gallery Arcturus moves to a different beat. Always free to enter, the space prioritizes the experience of the viewer to foster more meaningful connections in explorations of art.

Writer Riddhi Dhingra (@_riddhi.dhingra) spoke to curator Deborah Harris about the philosophies embedded in her curation process. The inaccessible and elitist nature of contemporary art scenes is something Harris actively works to combat in the space.

In Canadian art, literature and film, immigrant stories are often depicted through their struggles. Explorations of social and systemic issues are vital but for some, these modes of storytelling can become overbearing.

Immigrant identity isn’t monolithic and contributor Dania Daud (@dania.daud07) urges the necessity of multifaceted portrayals in our cultural landscape — otherwise, joy risks being overlooked. In this feature, the writer spoke to three immigrants about their most vibrant moments far away from their homelands.

Caught the Oscars over the weekend? You may have noticed ‘Frankenstein’ dominated the costume and makeup department, to no surprise. We have more to unravel about its narrative prowess!

Guillermo Del Toro’s 2025 adaptation may be the latest take on Mary Shelley’s original novel but it’s the first to successfully covey Shelley’s authored themes, writes our very own Film Editor Hajir Butt (@hajirbadger). Butt gives us a rundown of all the memorable parts of the film — like Jacob Elordi’s performance, his 11-hour award-winning SFX transformation or the filmmaker’s vulnerable screenwriting.

From the moment it introduced its DJ feature in 2023, music streaming platform Spotify begun its gradual integration of AI features — and there’s no slow-down in sight. With this algorithmic uptick and executive Daniel Ek’s sizeable investments in AI weapons manufacturing, some audiophiles are gravitating towards more ethical alternatives.

Writer Sukanna Naqvi spotlights different streaming substitutes for users who’ve had enough of Spotify’s profit-driven interface. Speaking with Toronto musician Kid Cricket (@kidcricketmusic), Naqvi also gains insights on how smaller artists are grappling with Spotify’s corruption of the streaming economy.
