What happened to the number 13?

Investigating the mysterious disappearance of the 13th floor

By: Zoie Karagiannis

Black background with red string scattered abount. In the centre-right of the page is a white box with a glowing red number 13 sitting under a magnifying glass. Above it is text that reads: CanCulture Investigates.

Looking into many elevators in Canada, you might be left wondering where the number 13 went. CanCulture has your answer. (Sama Nemat Allah/Canculture)

Picture this: You enter an elevator and study the buttons on the wall, only to find that the numbers jump from 12 to 14. If you stood outside and counted the number of floors of the building, it would be obvious that a 13th floor does exist. Yet here, standing in this elevator, you are left doubtful and confused. It begs the question: what happened to the number 13?

Some buildings purposefully omit a “13th floor,” advertising it as something else, such as the 14th floor, or a floor 12A. The number 13 seemingly has a stigma attached to it and some building developers will go out of their way to avoid it.

I am reminded of an episode in Wizards of Waverly Place, where characters Alex Russo and Harper Finkle move into an apartment building that contains a secret floor. Want to guess which number that was? If your money was on 13 - bingo!

This hidden floor was the home of many magical creatures of the Wizard World. So perhaps that’s where the 13th floor has disappeared to in many buildings today, with us mortals not being given the privilege of being privy to such a thing. If only we were wizards or werewolves… maybe then would we be able to unlock the mystery of the 13th floor.

In fact, fear of the number 13 is actually so common that it has its own name: triskaidekaphobia.

The number can be considered unlucky, which explains why some building developers choose to avoid having a 13th floor. But where did the number 13 get its bad reputation? Well, wonder no more– CanCulture is here to investigate it so you don’t have to.

(Disclaimer: No, you don’t actually need to be a wizard or werewolf!!!)

Superstitions surrounding this fear can originate from the Code of Hammurabi, which is one of the oldest documents in the world. The code reportedly left out a 13th law from a long list of legal rules (which turned out to be a clerical error made by a translator).

Other theories about the unluckiness of this number can also be traced back to ancient Norse mythology. At a dinner party in Valhalla, the 13th God to arrive was the troublesome Loki– and it was then that evil was brought into the world. In the Bible, the 13th guest to attend the Last Supper was Judas Iscariot, known as the one to betray Jesus.

However, fear of the number 13 is acknowledged mostly in the West, including Canada. While the discretion of adding a 13th floor in buildings or using it in addresses is up to each city, some have taken the extra step to have it entirely removed– or rather, adamantly included.

Surprisingly, the number 13 has been banned from addresses in Richmond Hill, Ont., a municipality of the Greater Toronto Area. According to the Canadian Press, new housing developments have not included the number 13 for at least 20 years, which development director Gus Galanis confirmed.

In 2013, the town also completely banned the use of the number four in new housing developments, as there were overwhelming requests of homeowners wanting to change or adapt their address numbers due to difficulty selling their homes.

Galanis said these requests were made due to cultural reasons. In some East Asian cultures, the number four is considered unlucky, as in Mandarin and Cantonese it sounds like the word “death.” Many buildings located in China avoid having a fourth floor, just as many buildings in Western cultures leave out the 13th.

Richmond Hill, Ont. was not the only city facing fears of the number four and 13. In 2015, the City of Vancouver decided to end the omission of the fourth and 13th floor. This came after most new applications for buildings hoped to leave them out, causing commotion for city staff. They feared safety concerns from firefighters and paramedics, who could be confused while responding to emergencies in buildings that did not have these numbered floors. CBC reported that new rules were put into place so new condo and office towers being developed in Vancouver would need to have every floor. The City of Edmonton also has a similar policy.

So next time you’re in an elevator and notice the “mysterious disappearance” of a 13th floor, remind yourself that it was likely a judgment made by the building’s developer, one rooted in Western superstition and fear.

Either that, or there really are magical creatures living secretly among a hidden floor! We’ve presented you with what we know- now it is up to you to decide what to believe.

By: Aru Kaul

If you’ve never given much thought to where the sweets you’ve been munching on this season come from, you’ll be surprised to learn that so many of your favourites originate from Canada! Keep reading to find out which ones and get a recommendation for what you should try based on your zodiac sign.

BIG TURK

ARIES

(March 21 to April 19)

Like this exclusively Canadian candy, you aren’t suited for everyone’s taste buds. But this also means that you’re a crowd favourite among those who appreciate you and among the ones that matter! Ignore the haters and just be you babe.

AERO

TAURUS

(April 20 to May 20)

You’re bubbly and sweet, just like this 87-year-old chocolate bar. When life gets too hectic, you know just how to wind down and take a breather. After all, what could be more relaxing than biting into an Aero and feeling the bubbles melt on your tongue? Just make sure your relaxing breaks don’t make you lose track of reality.

WINE GUMS

GEMINI

(May 21 to June 20)

Don’t be fooled by the name, wine gums sadly don’t have any wine in them, and lucky for your friends, neither do you. Like these elastic bonbons, you’re the sober driver mom friend everyone can count on after a party. Some people might think this makes you boring and it kind of does, but you embrace this title and take your role very seriously.

COFFEE CRISP

CANCER

(June 21 to July 22)

Just like their chocolatey exterior and coffee-flavoured inside, you have a personality that makes you perfect for all kinds of people! Kids love your sweet personality, adults love your strong disposition…you’re really killing it out here, crowd-pleaser! Just make sure you don’t lose your own identity while trying to make everyone else satisfied.

MALTESERS

LEO

(July 23 to August 22)

These small round chocolate balls are the perfect light snack to satisfy your sugar craving! Similarly, you add sweetness to everyone’s life in doses - and that’s why they can’t get enough of you! But you should watch out for anyone who tries to take advantage of your sweetness.

THRILLS GUM

VIRGO

(August 23 to September 22)

You might recognize this purple gum by its distinct colour and soapy taste. Some people might think this is weird and it is - but it’s also innovative and unique. After all, no one ever went down in history for being normal. We’re looking at you trailblazer.

CARAMILK

LIBRA

(September 23 to October 22)

You’re just like the mystery of how the caramel gets inside the chocolate bar, in that no one really gets you. But you’re completely okay with that. You like being enigmatic and keeping others on their toes. You believe that the less people know, the better.

CRISPY CRUNCH

SCORPIO

(October 23 to November 21)

This crunchy treat was introduced to shelves in 1912, making it one of the longest-running chocolate bars in Canada. You can’t go wrong with a chocolate and peanut butter combination. Just like the Crispy Crunch, you’ve also been around for a while (maybe not literally, but definitely spiritually) and you feel like you’ve seen it all. Remember that this is far from the truth and there’s always something more to discover!

BOUNTY

SAGITTARIUS

(November 22 to December 21)

Who would've thought that chocolate and coconut could go so well together? They’re such different flavours, but together they make sense. Remind you of anything? This is similar to you and your aspirations. People might think that your goals don’t make any sense or that you’re not capable of achieving them, but you prove them wrong every time!

GLOSETTE

CAPRICORN

(December 22 to January 19)

Just like these easy-to-eat raisins, you value the simple things in life. You don’t need a luxurious lifestyle to be happy. You would rather spend your time and money on the ones you love than on fancy things. After all, you can’t take ‘em with you.

EAT-MORE

AQUARIUS

(January 20 to February 18)

The aromatic dark chocolate and crunchy nuts in this bar will leave you wanting to eat more–hence the very appropriate denomination. Not only is this a great combination, but it’s also a great marketing tactic. This chocolate is representative of your mind. You always know how to make full use of your ideas and turn them into a fruitful reality.

MR. BIG

PISCES

(February 19 to March 20)

Mr. Big - We saved the best for last! With chocolate, peanuts, wafers and caramel, Mr. Big is a combination of different sweets. In the same way, Pisces is thought of as a combination of all the signs, containing traits from each one and transforming into whatever costume they need to be for the night. Way to go, you wild shape-shifter!

TMU students’ most loved gothic and thriller books this Halloween season

Immerse yourself in worlds where superstitions come to life and the dark talks back to you

By: Melanie Nava Urribarri

A book of horrors is displayed by a large tree amidst autumn leaves on a dark, foggy October morning. (Melanie Nava Urribarri/CanCulture)

As the final days of October set in, with the air getting colder and the nights getting darker, the need to curl up and read a good goosebump-inducing novel under the eerie moonlight may just creep up on you.

The thrill can be intoxicating and the need to satiate it is just as strong.

Luckily, if you’re low on ideas to dive into before the gloomy autumn charm ends, you won’t need witchcraft. Here are some Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) students’ favourite stories for you to explore this spooky season:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

This Gothic romance came up more than once among students. For second-year journalism student Kyana Alvarez, it was the mystery aspect that sold her.

“I’ve always been scared of someone or something living in the walls, so this book played into my own fears,” said Alvarez.

Author Charlotte Brontë uses many gothic elements to enhance the obscurity of the story and raise our anxiety.

“Seeing and hearing things you can’t explain or see but knowing it’s there is super freaky because you never know what could happen,” Alvarez adds.

Political science student Malaury Bien-Aime agrees and also mentions that the mystery from a feminist perspective is refreshing.

“It's a novel that changes perspective for women because Jane is not the societal norm in the 18th century,” said Bien-Amie. “It’s easy to feel her fears throughout the mystery because the character is relatable.”

The Black Cat by Edgar Allan Poe

Poe’s electrifying prose is sure to make you shiver and send a chill up your spine. Published in 1843, this Gothic horror classic isn’t a novel, but a short story that follows the narrator’s descent into madness.

“It’s just the gore of it that is actually traumatizing. It’s just so detailed it makes me perfectly imagine it and it feels gross in exciting ways,” said third-year chemistry student Cristina Díaz.

The Black Cat wonderfully illustrates Poe’s take on the capacity of the human mind to be aware of its own deterioration.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Another classic — this time with a sprinkle of sci-fi to give it life — comes recommended by second-year business management student Teresa Baricevic. Frankenstein is not only filled with hair-raising perspectives on human nature but a great connection to modern issues of control and sexuality.

“It’s a story of finding peace within oneself and a search for identity,” said Baricevic. “The imagery from the beautiful scenery and nature in Switzerland reflects the peace both Victor Frankenstein and The Creature crave.”

Frankenstein holds so many entrancing layers. If you aren’t reading for the captivating thrill, it’s still well worth getting lost in Mary Shelley’s criticisms of the patriarchal society and examinations of the human condition.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

This book is an award-winning 2020 gothic horror novel by a Mexican-Canadian author Silvia Moreno-Garcia. The story centres around a young woman uncovering treacherous secrets and stories of violence within family.

“When a character starts to question their grip on reality and the reader knows something isn’t right, it’s so thrilling and sometimes fear-inducing,” said Alvarez, providing insight into another favourite of hers. She added that because she’s “a huge scaredy cat,” the suspense in this book really got to her.

This novel has influences and inspirations from Mexican folklore, which not only makes it a novel perfect for Halloween, but also for Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated in October in Ontario.

If these novels aren’t quite to your taste, you may find second-year journalism student Fatima Raza’s recommendation more helpful. The most horrifying book she’s read for this season is, and will always be, her textbook.

4 iconic Canadian films to keep you up at night this Halloween

A spooky Canadian Halloween awaits for you on your TV screen

By: Alisha Shaikh

With Halloween approaching, let the horror-movie-bingeing begin. With so many great scary movies to watch, it may be hard to choose which one to start with. Here are a few iconic Canadian Halloween films to make your doom-scrolling a bit easier.

The Witch (2015)

Directed by Robert Eggers and starring Anya Taylor-Joy, The Witch is one of Canada’s most iconic horror films, earning more than $40 million USD at box office. Although The Witch is an international co-production between the United States and Canada, it is primarily shot in Southern Ontario.

The movie does a spectacular job of building suspense and engaging its audience. Max Weiss, a film critic for Baltimore Magazine, reviewed this film as a “more slow burn than an edge-of-your-seat thriller, but it builds steadily to its dreadful and earned conclusion.”

The story follows a farmer and his family in New England in 1630, whose life is filled with fear and despair when their youngest son mysteriously disappears. The oldest daughter (Anya Taylor-Joy) is blamed for her brother's death, which leads the family to drown in chaos. As their paranoia grows, suspicion of witchcraft is suspected, putting the clan's faith, loyalty and love for one another to the test. Although The Witch was released in 2015, it’s still a perfect movie to get you in the spooky Halloween mood. The movie has a score of 90 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Changeling (1980)

The Changeling is a classic Canadian-produced supernatural, psychological horror film that won a Canadian Screen Award for Best Screenplay. It was directed by Peter Medak and released in 1980, starring George C. Scott. The plot centers on composer John Russell, who is on vacation with his family when his wife and daughter are killed in a car accident. Russell, devastated by his loss and unable to cope, relocates to New York City in a massive, remote mansion. Soon after, Russell starts to feel the presence of a young boy who drowned in the bathtub of his new home. The film leads to uncovering the spine-chilling secrets of the boy's death and the mansion itself. The film left many feeling scared and terrified, which earns it a spot on this iconic Canadian Halloween movie list.

Ginger Snaps (2000)

Ginger Snaps, set and filmed in Ontario, is an iconic dark and gothic Canadian film. If you’re a horror movie fan with a love for werewolves, this is a must-watch. It was directed by John Fawcett, and it stars Katharine Isabelle and Emily Perkins, all three of whom are Canadian. It’s also highly acclaimed by moviegoers and critics alike, with a 90 per cent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes

The story follows two outcasted sisters obsessed with death. As they attempt to deal with the unfortunate consequences placed upon them, one is bitten by a deadly werewolf. Watch how these sisters' lives unravel with the actions they must take in order to prevent chaos. With plenty of plot twists, desire and murder, this modern classic has something for everyone.

Videodrome (1983)

A classic from the '80s, Videodrome is a movie housing a myriad of genres from horror to sci-fi to gore. Canadian David Cronenberg directed the film, which starred American James Woods. Videodrome is set in Toronto during the early 1980s and is produced by Telefilm Canada. The film centers on the CEO of a small television station in Toronto as he discovers a broadcast signal of odd movements. As he determines the origin of the signal, a strange mind-control conspiracy begins to unravel.

Videodrome was released in 1983 and was a raging success, earning more than $2 million USD at the box office. Brian Eggert, a veteran film critic for Deep Focus Review, reviewed it saying, “films like this rouse powerful reactions to their extreme metaphors and violent imagery; but then, there has never been a film quite like this one.”

Along with these four must-watch scary movies, there are so many more great Canadian horror films out there. This list is a great way to start your Halloween movie marathon!

All this look needs is a full white outfit and a snazzy pair of bell bottoms to complete the look. Pair it with a sick pair of sunglasses and slicked-back hair with copious amounts of gel and people will be mistaking you for the so-called King of Rock. If you really want to change up the look throw in some boots and add rhinestones everywhere.

The Grabber (The Black Phone)

Still from the movie, The Grabber. (Blumhouse Productions)

The Grabber might be terrifying, but nothing is too scary for Halloween. The notorious costume can be achieved with an all-black outfit you will already find in your closet! Add a red top underneath and don’t forget the infamous terrifying mask.

(Eddy Chen/HBO)

We all loved tuning in on Sunday nights to watch Euphoria and without a doubt, this was Maddy’s season. The queen looked amazing in every episode, serving us the best looks, including her iconic party outfit. All you need for this look is a cutout black dress and gloves. Throw in some strapped heels and slick you hear back with a headband. Don’t be shy to slick that eyeliner even more and glitter wherever you can.

Batman and Selina Kyle (The Batman)

Still from The Batman (2022) (Warner Bros. Pictures)

The Batman movie flame has been reignited this year through Robert Pattison's memorable portrayal of the crime-fighting DC hero. Piquing everyone's interest again after 5 years is sure to be the costume of this year, and why go solo, when you can have a perfect couple's costume of Batman and Selina? While you can buy these costumes, an easy DIY will also do the deed. For Catwoman, simply couple a black bodysuit with an eye mask. As for Batman, pairing a large black cape with an all-black outfit and a golden belt will do the trick. Don’t forget the iconic helmet to conceal your identity.

Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy

Here is another couple’s costume for DC fans. What’s a better duo than Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy? For this look, what you’ll need is any type of green dress, and make sure to add a lot of vines. Then you will need a full outfit of mixed black and red pieces along with fishnets. Add some of those colours to your hair as well and do the wildest makeup you can!

Wanda and Vision (WandaVision)

Still from WandaVision (Marvel Studios via Disney+)

For all Marvel fans, going as Wanda and Vision would be the perfect couple costume. Even better, dress up as this duo in their Halloween costumes which works as a  clever nod to their comic counterparts’ original outfits. For Wanda in her original costume, all you need are pink tights, a red bodysuit, and a red cape. Add on some red lipstick, throw on some gloves, and a cutout of a headpiece. For Vision’s OG look, you will need a green body suit with yellow boxers, a yellow cape, and a diamond on the chest. Paint your face red and stamp a good old infinity stone on your forehead.

The Addams Family is the perfect Halloween classic to watch and this spooky family functions just as well as a group costume. To be as poised as Morticia, you’llneed is a long black dress and long dark hair. Make sure to sculpt your face with black eyeshadow and add on her classic red lip. For Gomez, your outfit is something you might already have in your closet: a classic suit – and if you have to use your high school semi-formal fit, no one is judging. Make sure to slick your hair black and have his amazing stache, which you can pick up at any nearest Dollarama or Shoppers.

As for the sullen Wednesday, you will need a black dress with a white collar underneath. Put your hair into braids and even add on some black lipstick to pull it together. All young Pugsley needs is a striped black and white tee and some black shorts. No one can even tell the difference between real and fake.

Hocus Pocus 2 is bringing many nostalgic memories back with the release of the new sequel this year on Disney+. We all loved this witch trio then and we all still do now so if you're still thinking of ideas for your friend group of three, this is the perfect iconic look for you. To start off, you need red, black, and blonde hair to embody the three sisters. Along with that, get some desired coloured fabrics and use them as capes! Try adding some corsets and long skirts. Most of all, don’t forget your spell book!

The Scooby-Doo Gang

(Rebecca Johnston/Pinterest)

What better group costume than the classic Mystery crew from Scooby-Doo? For Daphne, throw on a purple dress, and a green scarf. Add some heels or boots and don’t forget her defining hair. Fred has a very classic look, so blue jeans and a white shirt will do whereas, for Velma, you'll need an all-orange outfit and some glasses. Last but not least, Shaggy: with some brown khaki pants and a light green shirt, you’ll pull off the protagonist with ease. For a laugh, add a fifth person dressed as the dog himself, Scooby!

  1. For the base of this creepy-crawly treat, it’s easier to buy ready-made mini pizzas, but you could definitely make your own too.

  2. To make the spiders, cut some black olives in half, then cut the other half into thin slices. This will be the body and legs.

  3. Assemble the olive slices in the shape of spiders on the pizza!

3. Monster Burger

This recipe is the perfect way to enjoy your burger of choice while also getting in the Halloween spirit!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Your patties of choice

  • Burger buns

  • Cheese

  • Lettuce

  • Green olives

  • A pair of scissors

  • Toothpicks

You can also include other ingredients if you like, but these are the main ones to make this scary sandwich!

Instructions:

  1. The first step is to cook your patties until they’re ready and place them on the bottom burger bun, on top of the lettuce.

  2. Then take your cheese out of its wrapper and start cutting. You’ll want to make a zigzag pattern on one end. Place it on the patty so that the zigzag hangs over the edge.

  3. Once you’ve closed the burger with the top bun, finish by putting two toothpicks with green olives on the top — these are the monster’s eyes.

4. Eyeball Pasta

This green, alien-like pasta is the perfect way to fill you up so you don’t eat too much candy!

For this dish, prepare some:

  • Pasta

  • Pesto sauce

  • Mozzarella balls

  • Black olives

Instructions:

  1. The first step is to boil your pasta and toss it with your pesto sauce of choice. If you want to make the pasta even more green, you can add a few drops of green food colouring.

  2. Slice some black olives and put them over the mozzarella balls — this is what you’ll top the pasta with.

  3. Now you can enjoy. Just don’t look it in the eye!

5. Jalapeno Mummies

Now, jalapenos can be a little hard to swallow on their own for many (especially young kids), but I bet you nobody will even have their guards up when they’re looking this adorable. All you need for these mighty little guys is:

  • Jalapenos

  • Cream cheese

  • Croissant dough

  • Candy eyeballs

Instructions:

  1. Cut each jalapeno in half and fill with cream cheese.

  2. Cut some croissant dough into thin strips and wrap them over the jalapeno to resemble a mummy. Leave some space for the eyes.

  3. Put them in the oven for 11 to 13 minutes and once they’ve cooled, stick on the candy eyeballs. Now you have something that will certainly spook out your guests with the spice!

5 candy recipes to try this Halloween

Because making desserts shouldn't be scarier than a horror movie

By: Ayleen Karamat

(Karolina Grabowska/Pexels)

Halloween is the best time of the year! With endless amounts of sweet treats, pumpkin patch visits and horror movies in the dark, there are so many things you can do to prepare for the spooky season. And while COVID-19 restrictions might have been relaxed across Canada this Halloween, some parents are still feeling uncertain about letting their unvaccinated or immunocompromised little ones go out trick-or-treating. But that’s no reason to miss out on all the fun, as you can learn how to create your own sweet treats for the season!

I’ll admit that I have absolutely no talent in the baking department. I mean, I'm shocked I haven’t set anything on fire yet. You would think that with my cooking abilities (self-proclaimed, obviously, but I can make a mean Thai red curry), I would have some talent for baking. No… not at all, but that doesn’t stop me from trying. This Halloween, I decided to challenge myself by making a few sweet treats and they all actually turned out pretty amazing!

If you're worried about going out for Halloween because of COVID-19 and you want to experiment with making some sweet treats for trick-or-treaters, or perhaps with younger siblings or children who want to help you, here are some of the easy candy recipes I made. If I can make them taste decent then so can you!

1. Peanut butter fudge

An easy version of peanut butter fudge (Ayleen Karamat/CanCulture)

Growing up, fudge used to be — and still is — my favourite sweet snack. I never knew that one day I could also be making it in my kitchen. This recipe by Insanely Good is so easy to make and only requires three ingredients! Did I tell you that this is all made in the microwave in under five minutes? You couldn't ask for a simpler recipe than this! You will need:

  • 250 ml (1 cup) unsalted butter

  • 250 ml (1 cup) peanut butter (the original recipe called for creamy peanut butter but I’m a fan of crunchy peanut butter)

  • 750 ml (3 cups) powdered sugar

  • Water (if your dough becomes too grainy, add at your own discretion)

  • 20-cm (8-inch) square pan

  • Parchment paper

  • Microwave-safe bowl

  • Spatula

Instructions:

  1. Line your pan with parchment paper and leave enough paper to hang over the edge. This makes it easy to remove the fudge from the pan as you can lift it out!

  2. Combine the butter and peanut butter in a microwave-safe bowl.

  3. Place it in the microwave for one minute and stir. Do that again for another minute and mix until the mixture is completely smooth.

  4. Add in the sugar and stir. The batter should be paste-like and a little thick.

  5. Spread the batter in the lined pan.

  6. Place another sheet of parchment paper on top of the fudge and press it down to make the top even.

  7. Place the pan in the fridge for up to two hours or even overnight.

  8. After the mixture has cooled you can cut the fudge into small squares with a knife. Enjoy!

Before the expert fudge makers come and attack me, yes, this recipe isn’t like a normal fudge recipe. You don’t cook the mixture in a pot, but this process makes instant fudge without all the hassle of temperature, heat and time. You can even have young children help out in the process. There isn’t an open flame that you have to worry about and it significantly decreases the cooking time. If you don’t like peanut butter or have a peanut allergy, there are so many other flavours you could use instead. If you want to make chocolate fudge, this recipe also only has three ingredients and uses the microwave!

2. Dalgona (Korean sugar candy)

Squid Game-inspired dalgona candy (Alyeen Karamat/CanCulture)

With the rise of the Netflix show Squid Game, the candy featured in the show has become a worldwide sensation! According to ABC News, “a dalgona stall in Seoul says sales boosted up to eight times” because of the popularity of the show. The recipe only calls for two — yes, two — ingredients and can be made within five minutes. Unlike the show, a thriller about survival in life-threatening games, dalgona has a cute history. Street vendors in Korea sell dalgona, also known as ppopgi, which was a very popular snack in the '70s and '80s. Customers who buy the candy and can get the shape out of the centre without breaking it get another free dalgona from the vendor. Making this candy can be a fun activity for young children and fans of the show for Halloween. This recipe makes enough for one candy piece. You will need:

  • 30 ml (2 tbsp) of white granulated sugar

  • A pinch of baking soda

  • Ladle or small egg frying pan

  • Wooden stick (disposable is better)

  • Baking tray

  • Butter or oil

  • A plate (or another flat surface)

  • Cookie cutters (any shape will do but if you want to mimic the show, find cookie cutters with the shape of circles, triangles, stars and umbrellas)

  • Lollipop sticks — optional

Instructions:

  1. Coat the flat surface and pan with a little bit of butter or oil. This helps the sugar not stick and makes for easy removal.

  2. In the ladle or small pan, add the sugar. Place this over medium to low heat.

  3. When the sugar starts to melt around the edges, use your wooden stick to stir in the rest of the sugar.

  4. Do this constantly, while making sure the sugar won’t burn on the heat. If there is smoke, take the mixture off the heat for a few seconds until it cools down. Repeat this as necessary until the mixture has no sugar clumps and is completely melted.

  5. Remove the mixture from the heat and add a tiny bit of baking soda. This is where your mixture should expand and become foamy. Stir until the baking soda is completely dissolved and caramel in colour.

  6. Pour the mixture onto the pan. This is where you can add the lollipop stick.

  7. Let this mixture cool for 30 seconds. Take the lightly oiled plate and press the slightly cooled mixture for five seconds into a thin disc.

  8. Immediately stamp it with a cookie cutter and let it set. Remove from the pan and use a toothpick or needle to get the shape out. Enjoy!

  9. For clean up, if you have hard sugar stuck to your materials, boil a pot of water and when it is boiling, plop your materials inside! Take them out after a few minutes and your materials should be as good as new.

You can also find countless videos on YouTube and TikTok about this viral candy that everyone seems to be making. For only two ingredients, this recipe takes a few good tries before you get the perfect candy, but once you get it right you won’t be able to stop making them!

3. Peanut butter cups

Homemade chocolate peanut butter cups (Ayleen Karamat/CanCulture)

Peanut butter cups are my vice, but homemade is really the way to go. If you are obsessed with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups like I am, challenge yourself to see if you can make them from scratch! Here is what you need for the recipe:

  • A package of milk chocolate chips

  • 250 ml (1 cup) of peanut butter

  • Cupcake pan

  • Muffin liners

  • Microwave-safe bowl

Instructions:

  1. Place your muffin liners in a cupcake pan.

  2. Place half of the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl, and melt in the microwave for two minutes.

  3. Once melted, fill the muffin cups halfway with the melted chocolate. Use a spoon to help you coat the sides of the muffin cups. Refrigerate for 20 minutes before the next step.

  4. Spoon the peanut butter into the chocolate cups, filling them about three-quarters of the way.

  5. Melt the remaining chocolate chips in the microwave and spoon them over the filling.

  6. Refrigerate for 10 to 20 minutes. Enjoy!

Instead of using milk chocolate, you can mix it up and use dark chocolate. The warm and dark taste of chocolate complements the nutty and salty flavour of peanut butter. I also tried making a strawberry jam filling and a Nutella filling by taking both fillings and adding them about three-quarters of the way into the cups, and then covering them with melted chocolate to lock it into place. This makes for great a peanut-free recipe! Here is a great resource for other fillings you can use in your cups.

4. Peanut brittle

This peanut brittle can be made in the microwave (Ayleen Karamat/CanCulture)

This recipe is something I’ve grown up with and had at every family get-together, so making it was very nostalgic. The best part of this recipe is that you can cook it all in your microwave. Here is what you need:

  • 250 ml (1 cup) white sugar

  • 125 ml (1/2 cup) light corn syrup

  • 250 ml (1 cup) peanuts (use whatever kind of nuts you want! I used 125 ml of peanuts and 125 ml of walnuts)

  • 5 ml (1 tsp) vanilla extract

  • 5 ml (1 tsp) butter

  • 5 ml (1 tsp) baking soda

  • Butter, cooking spray or parchment paper to coat the bowl and pan

  • Microwave-safe bowl

  • Baking pan

  • Spatula

Instructions:

  1. Add butter or cooking spray to the bowl, baking pan and spatula. When the sugar hardens it will be very hard to get out so this helps you prepare beforehand! If sugar does harden on your materials, you can always put them in a bowl of boiling water.

  2. Combine the sugar and corn syrup in a bowl. Microwave for four minutes at one-minute intervals. Be very careful, the bowl is very hot!

  3. Add in the peanuts and use your spatula to stir in the sugar mixture.

  4. Place the bowl back into the microwave and cook it for 3.5 minutes (again, at one-minute intervals so you don’t burn anything)

  5. Take the bowl out and add the vanilla extract and butter.

  6. Microwave the mixture one last time for one minute.

  7. Remove the bowl from the microwave and add the baking soda. Keep mixing until the peanut brittle becomes orange and foamy.

  8. Take the candy out of the bowl and spread it evenly on the buttered baking pan. Try to be quick and careful because the mixture is very hot. If you take your time it will almost immediately set.

  9. Let the peanut brittle set at room temperature until it is cool to the touch.

  10. Break it into small pieces and you’re done!

This sweet and salty recipe is perfect for dinners, snacking or even gifting. I served this at my mom’s birthday and my family approved — so you know it tastes amazing!

5. Candy cookie bars

This cookie bar is a delicious use for your leftover Halloween candy (Ayleen Karamat/CanCulture)

I think out of all the recipes I tried, this one had to be my favourite. I liked the freedom I had with the chocolates I could use, and I’m also a sucker for cookie dough! Any kind of candy will do, from peanut-free options to your leftover Halloween candy. Who doesn’t love a cookie bar filled with all of your favourite sweets! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 250 ml (1 cup) white sugar

  • 250 ml (1 cup) brown sugar

  • 250 ml (1 cup) melted butter

  • 2 eggs

  • 10 ml (2 tsp) vanilla extract

  • 2 ml (1/2 tsp) salt

  • 2 ml (1/2 tsp) baking powder

  • 500 ml (2 cups) flour

  • 375 ml (1.5 cups) assorted candy of your choice

  • Large bowl

  • Spatula

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 175 C (350 F).

  2. Chop your candy of choice into bite-size pieces.

  3. Mix the two sugars and melted butter in a large bowl. Whisk until the mixture turns lighter in colour.

  4. Add in the eggs, vanilla, salt, flour and baking powder until the mixture is completely blended and smooth.

  5. Add in your candy. Make sure that everything is evenly mixed.

  6. Pour your mixture into a lightly greased pan. Smooth and place it in the oven.

  7. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes.

This recipe allows a lot of freedom for whatever choice of candy you would like. You can even add in leftover candy from Halloween. To make the cookie bars look more colourful, add different types of chocolates. You can even add small candies like M&Ms or candy eyeballs to give them that pop of colour.

I hope some of these recipes inspire you to make something delicious for Halloween, whether it’s for yourself, your kids or for family get-togethers.

Somehow, even though this is the first Halloween in ages, you are still scrambling to find a fun, creative last-minute costume. You’ve made it! Below are the most unique solo, couples and group DIY costumes to make sure you stand out this Halloween.

Solo Costumes

Olivia Rodrigo (Sour)

You’ll be instantly recognizable in this unique five-minute DIY costume. Check out the step-by-step guide here.

Violet (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory)

(Addis_Ellie/Twitter)

We all hated her when we were younger. Now, Violet’s iconic blue-velvet tracksuit and “I’m all that” attitude is just the look to earn all the praise from your friends this Halloween. Dig out the blues in your closet, get creative with your eyeshadow palette, and have a pack of gum handy all night for this cute twist on a classic character. Get your friends in on it for a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-themed group costume!

Captain Underpants

(Emma Chamberlain/Instagram)

Pop on some cute boy-short underwear and a sports bra for this fun and one-of-a-kind costume. If you don’t own a red cape, you can use a red scarf or carpet to complete the look (just like he does)! This look works for anyone and everyone.

Breadwinner

(Hillaryous_/Instagram)

Kacey Musgraves’ “Breadwinner” has been the tune of the month on TikTok. Pull out your cutest athletic wear and any old medals you may have (or you can buy some at your local dollar store for very cheap). The best part about this outfit? You can carry around your favourite kinds of bread for a nice snack without anyone judging you (also everyone will love you for the free food).

Vintage Wind-Up Doll

(TaylorJoelleBlog.com)

Any cute dress works for this look: the “dollier” it looks, the better. For the “wind” in the back, try this easy tutorial that only requires cardboard and a belt. This look is great for those who want to go all out with their makeup and hair. Drastic and vintage makeup is encouraged!

Edna (The Incredibles)

(BretmanRock/Instagram)

Edna is a fan favourite from The Incredibles and this costume allows for some creativity in her ensemble. Any black in your closet can easily be put together to form this iconic look. Pair it with a black wig and round glasses from your local dollar store and you’re ready to go!

Coraline

(Honey_Cot/Instagram)

Coraline was a movie that scarred all of us in our childhoods but there’s no time like the present to face our fears by diving into this cute and easy costume. All you need is a yellow raincoat (feel free to replace it with any yellow clothing item from your closet) and yellow rain boots or shoes. Try a wig or temporary blue dye if you feel like adding some spice to your ensemble.

Bowl of Cereal

(Maskerix.com)

If you’re looking for something a little different to show off your quirky and creative side, this hilarious DIY is an ace. This costume requires a little more work, but the end result is definitely worth it. Cut a hole in a plastic basket and paint it white. For the “cereal,” customize the look with whatever brand you have at your disposal (even try out the Tim Hortons Timbit cereal for a classic Canadian take). Cotton in the basket will give the illusion of “milk” around the cereal. If your basket doesn’t stay up, you can sew it to your top and bottoms, or attach suspenders to it. Attach an empty milk carton to a headband if you want a little extra flavour. The spoon can simply be created with cardboard and then covered with tin foil. Voila! You’ve got a cereal costume!

Ash Ketchum (Pokemon)

(JheneAiko/Instagram)

This cute femme Ash Ketchum is a great way to don a creative costume with minimum effort. Find a white button-up you’re okay to part ways with. Paint the front blue with yellow accents (you can buy fabric paint at your local dollar store). Cut holes in green socks for the fingerless gloves, and finish the look with a baseball cap. Bonus points if you have a Pokemon or Pokeball plushie to bring the look home.

Elle Woods (Legally Blonde)

(KimKardashian/Instagram)

There’s no time like the present to appreciate the iconic Elle Woods. Any pink dress along with big sunglasses will do. Add a book in one arm and a big fluffy pink pen in the other and you’ve got Elle Woods! Bonus points if you have a mini dog to carry around in a purse with you.

Couple’s Costumes

Bert and Ernie

(Chatelaine/Pinterest)

Name a more iconic duo. This look has rarely been done but allows for so much innovation. You can go classic Bert and Ernie with big bulky sweaters and mom jeans, or try a cuter look like the one above. This is a great costume to stand out among the crowd and look like the coolest duo in the room.

Chucky and Tiffany

(Costume-Works.com)

If you want to go for something more traditionally scary this year, Chucky and his bride Tiffany is a great DIY (and very simple too)! For Chucky: A red top and blue overalls. For Tiffany: a white dress and a black leather jacket. Add some blood and makeup effects to really finish the look.

Cosmo and Wanda

(TannerMann.com)

It’s TV’s favourite couple! This femme Cosmo and Wanda costume only requires a white top and tie for Cosmo and a yellow top for Wanda. Add some cute fairy accessories you can make yourself at home or purchase. Pair it with skirts, shorts or pants! Green and Pink hair is a must though, and you can find wigs or temporary hair dye at your local dollar store.

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy

(Maranda Martin/Pinterest)

This is a fun look from your childhood and also surprisingly easy to recreate. The belts, hats, eye mask and shells can be made with craft paper. You can buy green tights from your local Walmart, and you probably have some gloves lying around the house somewhere from the pandemic. Find or borrow an orange and red shirt, pair it with black shorts and a blue neck scarf and you’ve got a costume everyone will love. Also, don’t forget your invisible boatmobile!

Flint and Sam (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs)

(Naitzaves/Imgur)

This adorable couple's costume is a rare sight at Halloween festivities, yet it’s so smart and recognizable. A lab coat and black pants for flint, a pink shirt, glasses, khaki pants and boots for Sam, and you’ve got a quick and iconic couple’s costume for the books. Animal plushies act as great accessories to this costume.

Letter Wall and Joyce Byers (Stranger Things)

(CostumeYeti.com)

This is such a fun way to represent your favourite show without going for the basic Eleven with her waffles look. The letter wall is hilarious, creative and bound to get plenty of compliments. All you need is some black paint, a white shirt and Christmas lights. For Joyce, a classic Mrs. Byers look includes a flannel shirt, a wired phone and a perpetually scared look on your face.

Statue of Liberty and Tourist

(Popsugar/Pinterest)

This costume requires a green dress (or bed sheet if you want to get really creative) and some cardboard and paint for the Statue of Liberty look. For the tourist look, if you don’t already own an “I heart NY” shirt, you can pick one up from your local thrift store (seriously, they’re everywhere!) or try making your own with fabric markers! Any other stereotypical tourist accessories are encouraged (I’m talking fanny packs, socks and sandals, a camera, a lanyard around the neck, sunglasses, and so on). The statue also looks great gender-bent. Get creative!

Wicked Witch of the West and the Good Witch

(GreenWeddingShoes.com)

For those duos that are the epitome of naughty vs. nice friend, the Wicked Witch of the West and her sister, the Good Witch Glinda, is the costume for you. You don’t even need to go all out with a ballgown for this. A nice light blue or white dress would be a perfect way to dress down this look for the same effect. Big princess-y jewellery, and a tiara and wand complete the Good Witch look. For the Bad Witch, a black dress, classic witch hat and green body paint are all you need. Pair it with a broom from your household or try DIYing a traditional witch broom for less than $5 to accessorize.

April and Andy (Parks and Recreation)

(Brinton Parker)/Popsugar

Calling all Parks and Recreation fans! This iconic April and Andy costume is an easy one to recreate. Pair a white button-up and black tie with a dark windbreaker that you can tape some construction paper onto to create the FBI logo. Black sunglasses and a fake FBI badge complete the look. For April, simply a black dress, pearl necklace, and head bonnet create the perfect look. Don’t forget the black stick in hand that you pretend to smoke while shamelessly flirting with Andy!

Blue and Steve (Blue’s Clues)

(Rachel Navarro/Pinterest)

This look is effortlessly cute. An oversized blue shirt with some darker blue spots taped or glued on creates the perfect Blue outfit. Use some construction paper to create ears that you can attach to a headband to complete the costume. For Steve, simply a green striped shirt and brown pants work perfectly. Bonus points if Steve has a yellow notepad to doodle in!

Group Costumes

Bob’s Burgers

(JenkinsShannon89/Buzzfeed)

This group costume is instantly recognizable and can be easily created using clothing and items from your household. This iconic family costume is missing Gene, but his look can easily be created with a yellow shirt and optional blue vest (also a melodica to really lock the look in). The best part about this family costume is that you can adapt it based on how many people are in your group. This can be a duo costume (Bob and Linda) or triples (Louise, Tina, Gene) or you can add more fun characters in, such as Teddy and Aunt Gayle.

Inside Out

(UglyDucklingHouse.com)

Inside Out is a great costume for those friend groups that have the “happy” one, the “sad” one, or the “mad” one. As long as you get the colours right, the outfits are easily customizable and can be made from regular clothes found in your closet. Get creative with your makeup for a little extra sparkle.

Winnie the Pooh

(Popsugar/Pinterest)

A classic group costume that has been recreated many times in many different forms. You can opt for oversized tees, cute dresses, onesies or adjust it to the style of your own group. All you need is the general colours for each character and some ear headbands that you can purchase online or make yourself. If dresses are not your style, you can opt for pants and some cute coloured crop tops. The honey jar is a perfect accessory for Pooh!

Classic Archie

(Rebekka Sorensen/FIDM Museum)

Netflix original Riverdale took the world by storm several years ago, but before the mysteries of Riverdale High took place, Betty, Veronica, Archie, and Jughead existed as simple teens in the classic Archie comics. Go old school with your four best friends with some '50s inspired fits and makeup. DIY the letter sweaters with some craft paper and tape, and dig out some big puffy skirts from your mom’s closet, and boom! You’ve got a unique twist on the classic characters. Make a crown for Jughead and some dramatic hair to really make it feel like the '50s.

The Powerpuff Girls

(HikenDip/Pinterest)

Any trio needs to attempt a version of this costume at one point or another. There is no wrong way to be a Powerpuff Girl. As long as you have the colours green, pink and blue somewhere in your closet, you’ve got all the materials you need to make this costume your own. Fun coloured makeup, big sunglasses and any and all accessories are encouraged. If you want to dress it down for a more casual look, you can try oversized tees in each colour for an effortless look.

Shrek

(Costume-Works.com)

Why not get your friends in on one of the biggest memes of our age and one of the best movie franchises of our childhoods? This group costume works for any number of people, as there are tons of recognizable characters from the movie trilogy. Pick a character that you love and chances are you can pull something out of your closet to DIY the look in a cute, modern way. Shrek only requires a white tee, some brown fabric and green face paint. For Fiona? A green dress, red wig and a tiara complete the outfit. Have some fun by trying the Puss in Boots, Lord Farquad, or Gingerbread Man costume.

Phineas and Ferb

(Holly Librande/Pinterest)

This adorable take on the girls of Phineas and Ferb is such a unique girl group costume. Add in Phineas, Ferb, Perry, Dr. Doofenshmirtz to widen the group. For Isabella, all you need is a pink dress, white tee and a pink bow you can make with some fabric. Candace only requires a red top and white bottoms, but red hair really makes the ensemble whole. For Vanessa, simply a leather black outfit from head to toe and sleek dark hair are required. Have another girl in the group? Add in Tracy with a green top, blue bottoms and a blue bow to top it off.

The Wizard of Oz

(Taylor Nations/Pinterest)

The Wizard of Oz is a story that will never get old. There are so many ways to interpret this group costume. You can dress it up or down, but this cute group look hits the spot perfectly. The key to this costume is the accessories. Simple items from your closet paired with creative makeup and DIY accessories (the Tin Man’s hat, the Scarecrow’s straw, the Lion’s mane) come together to make the cutest costumes for you and your friends.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

(Brit.Co/Instagram)

Who doesn’t love the Ninja turtles? All you need for this fun group of four costume is some green from your closet, and colour fabrics depending on your ninja turtle. Purple, red, blue, or orange will do. These girls DIY’d their shells with tin foil baking pans spray-painted green and some string tied on each side so you can wear your shell like a backpack. This is an easy and fun customizable look for your friends. Accessorize by DIYing the iconic Ninja Turtles weapons.

Adventure Time

(Allison Chan/Popsugar)

Adventure Time has what seems like hundreds of recognizable characters. This girl group chose to be some of the iconic women of Adventure Time. Add in the iconic Jake and Finn for some extra friends, or Marceline the Vampire Queen to continue the strong female character vibe. Bright colours and wigs are your friends with this cartoon-y group costume.

Iconic movie and TV characters played by Canadians to recreate this Halloween

If you haven't picked your Halloween costume for this year yet, here’s a list of characters notorious for their unique style.

By: Anna Maria Moubayed

(Abby Grant / CanCulture)

(Abby Grant / CanCulture)

As Halloween slowly begins to approach, many people go through their existing wardrobe to put together a fun costume, while others start hunting for costume ideas and clothing pieces. Either way, you’re in luck! This article has a list of Canadian actors from movies and TV shows, with roles that put them on the map.

1. Catherine O’Hara

This Canadian actress, comedian, and writer was a central character in the classic holiday film Home Alone. All you need to be Kevin’s mom is a beige coat, a white shirt, a scarf to protect you from the winter cold, a pair of gold earrings, and a worried look on your face. Walk around town looking for your son, screaming “Kevin!” and people are sure to recognize you as one of the best movie moms of all time.

Alternatively, grab whatever obnoxious item you can find around the house and turn it into “designer clothing” to fully embody O’Hara’s famous Moira Rose character from the Canadian TV show Schitt's Creek. This can span anywhere from a tablecloth with a belt to your pet as a headpiece. Of course, pay close attention to the wig you choose to match the outfit and your mood. Most importantly, don’t forget the red lipstick.

2. Eugene Levy

If you want to have a cute couple’s costume, here’s an idea: Moira’s character is only complete with her husband, Johnny Rose, who was played by Canadian actor, comedian, producer, director and writer Eugene Levy. Put on your best suit, borrow your dad’s best handkerchief and add some flour into your hair to get that iconic “silver fox” look. Now all you have to do is buy a town for your son.

3. Matthew Perry

Matthew Perry is a Canadian-American actor, executive producer, and comedian. He is best known for his role as Chandler Bing in the TV series Friends. Practice your jokes, sarcastic remarks, and stressing the wrong words in a sentence. All you need for his look is a shirt, your dad’s vest, and maybe a funky tie.

4. Jim Carrey

The famous actor, comedian, writer, and producer is known for his energetic performances, making sure you’ll be the life of the party. With his long list of movie and TV show characters, you have many options. Let’s focus on three movie characters that would make great Halloween costumes.

Stanley Ipkiss, his character from The Mask will require you to drink a lot of coffee to match his energy. Other than that, all you will need is a green mask or face paint and a dashing yellow suit.

Be your natural self dressing up as Lloyd Christmas, Carrey’s character from the movie Dumb and Dumber. Wear your most comfortable clothes, get the bowl cut, and add in a tooth gap. All that’s left is your partner in crime and your dog-shaped mode of transportation.

Alternatively, grab your craziest pair of pants, along with your craziest shirt, and maybe a fluffy pink tutu to replicate another one of his famous characters: Ace Ventura from the movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Perhaps the most important part of this costume will be getting the hair just right, so make sure you stock up on a lot of hair gel.

5. Sandra Oh

Get ready to show off all your high school biology knowledge! Oh’s famous character, Cristina Yang from Grey’s Anatomy will not only be a killer Halloween costume but also highly effective as a COVID-19 safety measure. Incorporate a medical mask into your costume to stay safe.

You can also dress as her helpful principal character from The Princess Diaries or a badass teacher from Ramona and Beezus. Grab a nice shirt and a matching pencil skirt, and get ready to deal with princess drama or make a troubled little very happy.

6. Ryan Gosling

Polish up your dance routine, make sure to practice your jazz pieces on the piano, and put on your best suit and tie set to be Ryan Gosling’s famous character Sebastian "Seb" Wilder from La La Land. Let your friends know that you might break out in song at any moment and they should consider themselves warned. See if you can borrow a pair of tap shoes to complete the look.

7. Christopher Plummer

This legendary Canadian actor had a career that spanned seven decades. Who wouldn’t want to be him? His iconic role in the classic movie The Sound of Music portrayed the strict, yet caring and handsome Captain Von Trapp. For this look, you will need a dashing suit, fit for a captain, and either a guitar or a whistle, depending on whether you want to be the strict or caring side of the Captain. Finally, you will need seven children. The latter is usually hard to find, but you could always substitute them with pets, plushies, or potatoes.

8. Rachel McAdams

Grab any pink piece of clothing you own, we’re going shopping! Channel your inner spoiled, popular high schooler by putting together a jarringly pink and undoubtedly uncomfortable outfit. Rachel McAdams’ iconic Regina George character from Mean Girls is sure to make people recognize who you’re dressed up as instantly. This evil genius not only bossed the crew around but wreaked havoc when things didn’t go according to her plan. Get ready for the “spring fling” like it’s your Olympics. Have you started training yet?

9. Michael J. Fox

Maybe the future will get better? It is no secret that the Back to the Future movies are staples in movie history. Become Michael J. Fox’s legendary character Marty McFly and get ready to travel. All you need is a pair of jeans, some layered shirts, a confused look on your face, possibly your passport and proof of vaccination to be able to travel, and a puffy vest to top it all off; the perfect outfit for a Canadian fall.

10. Tommy Chong

Tommy Chong’s character Leo from That 70s Show is possibly the perfect Halloween costume. Grow out your hair and beard and find a 70s closet you can invade. You will need a lot of denim clothing. Truly let your weird side shine with this character. Share your hippie-era stoner wisdom with the people around you, and the worthy will listen.

These classic characters make for great Halloween costumes. Whether you have all the time in the world to put together the perfect outfit or you want to use what you already have and create a last-minute costume, these characters will get you recognized by all trick-or-treaters. Don’t be scared of modifying these costumes to fit your style, comfort, and our Canadian weather. Happy Halloween!

Canadian horror movies to watch this Halloween

By Alya Stationwala

Spooky season is finally here! If you’re looking for something to watch in the dark, look no further. While Freddy Krueger and Michael Meyers may be wandering the streets of the U.S., here are some purely Canadian features that will have you begging for a Timmies Double Double to keep you from having nightmares. From getting lost in the snowy landscape of Banff National Park or getting mauled by a deranged miner, here are our top Canadian horror picks.

Summer of ‘84 (2018)

A serial killer story from the Montreal-based directorial trio RKSS (Francois Simrad, Anouk Whissell, Yoann-Karl Whissell), Summer of ’84 follows a Stranger Things season 2-esque cast in their attempt to uncover the person behind the mass killings in their area. Heavily vulgar, this coming-of-age story successfully leaves you in suspense, especially in the highly climactic third act. With a slower pace than most horror movies, this Canadian feature focuses in on the mystery more than the fear in a distorted and dirty Goonies -like homage.

Ghostkeeper (1981)

Essentially a Canadian tourism ad, Ghostkeeper follows stranded snowmobilers facing a mysterious creature found in the abandoned hotel they stay in to keep warm. Based on the Indigenous legend of the Wendigo, a flesh-eating monster, the movie promises a creature-feature but ends up being more of a suspenseful ‘lost in the snowy wilderness’ story like The Shining. Filmed in Banff with an ever-changing script, it’s a slow burner but nevertheless a truly Canadian suspense story featuring Hudson’s Bay coats and endless snowy landscapes.

Pontypool (2008)

Taking place almost entirely in the confined space of a radio studio, this Ontario zombie flick is definitely different. A normal work day for radio host Grant turns sour when he gets a call about a mass virus spreading across the downtown area in his small town. Turns out the cause is the English language. Possibly an Anglo-Saxon vs. French Canadian satire, this oddly funny zombie apocalypse never really shows the creatures but does show native English speakers struggling to remember the French language.

Cube (1997)

Now a cult classic with multiple sequels under the same name, Cube is an escape room set in a claustrophobic maze. Riddled with motion censored traps, several strangers are stuck in the confined spaces of a box, 26 rooms by 26 rooms, where they have to help each other and use their strengths to figure out what’s going on and how to get out. If you have a fear of tight spaces, you might want to stay away from this movie by American-Canadian director Vincenzo Natali.

My Bloody Valentine (1981)

This Canadian slasher by George Mihalka tells the story of the town of Valentine Bluff that faced a serial killer that murdered a mass group of young people during a Valentine’s Day dance 20 years prior to the film’s setting. Now, with a fresh batch of teenagers who only know that story as a local legend, another Valentine’s Day dance is underway, and the gas-masked killer is back. My Bloody Valentine is a classic small-town murder movie with police cover ups and rowdy teens, but where this movie earns its horror fame is in the killings: a guy getting cooked into hot dogs, and a woman becoming part of a shower system — this horror movie is shockingly inventive when it comes to gore.

Ginger Snaps (2000)

A coming of age, puberty metaphor shaped into a werewolf horror flick, this Canadian feature directed by John Fawcett did what Megan Fox did in Jennifer’s Body before she ever put on that short school-girl skirt. Pinning two very close siblings against each other when one starts kidnapping dogs and having unprotected sex, this sister-versus-sister creature feature has all the angry teenage fighting, paired with oblivious parents to the crazy shenanigans going on, to make a movie filled with screams, blood, and fun.

The Changeling (1980)

In this haunted house-poltergeist scenario mixed with Ghost Whisperer-like aspects, such as helping the dead move on, a widowed composer (John Russell) ends up in a secluded Victorian mansion to try and get his life back together after a car accident that killed his wife and daughter. When cupboards start opening and things start moving around by themselves, he discovers the ghost of a young boy that is seeking help to figure out how exactly he died in the house. John delves into an investigation on the boy, and the more he finds out, the darker things turn. If you’re looking for the origin of the famous horror scene of an object (usually a ball) bouncing slowly down the stairs only to land at the feet of the person watching, this is your movie.

Videodrome (1983)

Of course, you can’t have a top Canadian horror movies list without including famous Canadian director David Cronenberg. Three years before he made his famously disgusting The Fly starring Jeff Goldblum, he made Videodrome, a horror story that pushes the limits of reality television. When Max Renn (James Woods) finds a broadcast of pure sex and brutality, he begins to face a mind-altering reality created by the subliminal messages of the show, controlling hallucinations and the blending of what is real and what is not. Paired with Canadian Howard Shore’s unnerving score, the movie questions television viewership on a whole new level.

Les Affamés (2017)

Directed by Robin Aubert, this Quebecois horror film and TIFF selection in 2017 is a classic zombie apocalypse story with a slight twist. While still having the traditional unlikely group of survivors bonding and people-eating zombies caused by a virus plot, Aubert adds in a little mystery. His zombies gather mounds of toys, furniture, appliances and other pre-zombie items from their past to look at and feel pain when injured. How the virus spreads and why they do this weird ritual is never really explained. Rather than going into the build up of an outbreak, Les Affamés places viewers in the middle of the action to enjoy all the zombie goodness straight from the beginning.
